Titleist Pro V1 and Pro V1x remains the most popular ball around the world every single year. With the new update this year that promises to be more durable, longer and more spin, Titleist’s stranglehold on the throne is unlikely to change anytime soon.
The 2009 Pro V1 and Pro V1x
The Golf Balls are Longer
One of the most noticeable difference of the new Pro Vs are the harder cover. This is great for golfers because it means the ball will roll further.
They’ve also further improved the dimple patterns so there’s less drag on the ball while it’s in flight. What does this mean? More yards for everything from driver to irons (putter too if you swing hard enough).
Pro V1 and Pro V1x are More Durable
The guys at Titleist took our concern to heart and made the golf balls more durable. This means that the balls will have less scuff marks and will last longer (for those that actually can keep the ball in the fairway and don’t lose them much).
Pro V1 and Pro V1x Spins
This is where the difference starts. The design goal of Pro V1 was to increase spin with irons while the Pro V1x were changed to have less spin with irons.
- Pro V1 – The core is slight larger (by 1.3%) and the mantle layer is also thinner with a new ionomer blend. The cover is made up of a new urethane blend.
- Pro V1x – The mantle layer is made up of a new ionomer blend and the cover is using a new urethane blend.
Identifying the New Pro V1 and Pro V1x
Titleist definitely kept the tradition of having the Pro V1 using black numbers while the Pro V1x having red numbers (this is a good thing). The way to identify the new 2009 versions against the old is on the side as shown (Pro V1 is displayed, Pro V1x is with the extra x).
As you can see, the arrows are similar to the 2007 version with the addition of two black dots on the sides.
The scheme for the Pro V1x is the same, only that the Pro V1 is replaced with the Pro V1x (obviously).
Real World Tests with the 2009 Pro V1 and Pro V1x
The Pro V1 seems to spin more but at a lower trajectory than its predecessor which I really like. During my driver tests, the ball seems to be able the same in distance but it is definitely more durable.
The Pro V1x on the other hand definitely doesn’t spin as much so everything is rolling more. Distance for my swing has improved by a couple yards but nothing major.
Overall, there’s no major changes in these new versions but they are definitely better because of the durability factor.
