adam scott

The cool looking Adam Scott always captured fans of all ages with his golf talents and also good looks.  In fact, he is one of the few to be sponsored by a well known fashion brand (Burberry).

Adam Scott’s swing was very similar to Tiger Woods’ when he first came on tour.  However, as both players evolved through the years, they started showing their differences.  However, the basic fundamentals are still there and judging from both of their success, all we can say is that “The Swing Works!”

JB Holmes

J.B. Holmes’ real name is John but he really prefers to be called J.B.  He really came onto the PGA Tour running as he won the PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament in 2005, then finished tenth at the first PGA Tour he played and won his first tournament on Tour in February (FBR. Open) already!

Of course, it helps when he hits it sooooooo far but he is really an all around player that cannot be taken lightly when you play against him.

Y.E. Yang

Y.E. Yang is a player that reminds us that there is no shame in having lots of head covers in our golf bags. The south Korean PGA Tour player has a driver, 2 fairway woods as well as two hybrids in his set when he won his first PGA Tour tournament.

If he can win on the PGA Tour with hybrids, maybe we can all benefit as we probably have an even slower swing speed!

robert allenby
Even though Robert Allenby hasn’t won in the PGA Tour or European Tour in quite a while, he continues to be a solid player that performs week in and week out.

The young Australian now plays primarily in the US even though he has most of his success in the PGA Tour of Australia. With over $16 million in career earnings, who could really blame him?

titleist prov1 prov1x box
Titleist Pro V1 and Pro V1x remains the most popular ball around the world every single year. With the new update this year that promises to be more durable, longer and more spin, Titleist’s stranglehold on the throne is unlikely to change anytime soon.

The 2009 Pro V1 and Pro V1x

The Golf Balls are Longer

One of the most noticeable difference of the new Pro Vs are the harder cover.  This is great for golfers because it means the ball will roll further.

They’ve also further improved the dimple patterns so there’s less drag on the ball while it’s in flight.  What does this mean?  More yards for everything from driver to irons (putter too if you swing hard enough).

Pro V1 and Pro V1x are More Durable

The guys at Titleist took our concern to heart and made the golf balls more durable.  This means that the balls will have less scuff marks and will last longer (for those that actually can keep the ball in the fairway and don’t lose them much).

Pro V1 and Pro V1x Spins

This is where the difference starts.  The design goal of Pro V1 was to increase spin with irons while the Pro V1x were changed to have less spin with irons.

  • Pro V1 – The core is slight larger (by 1.3%) and the mantle layer is also thinner with a new ionomer blend.  The cover is made up of a new urethane blend.
  • Pro V1x – The mantle layer is made up of a new ionomer blend and the cover is using a new urethane blend.

Identifying the New Pro V1 and Pro V1x

titleist prov1Titleist definitely kept the tradition of having the Pro V1 using black numbers while the Pro V1x having red numbers (this is a good thing).  The way to identify the new 2009 versions against the old is on the side as shown (Pro V1 is displayed, Pro V1x is with the extra x).

As you can see, the arrows are similar to the 2007 version with the addition of two black dots on the sides.

The scheme for the Pro V1x is the same, only that the Pro V1 is replaced with the Pro V1x (obviously).

Real World Tests with the 2009 Pro V1 and Pro V1x

The Pro V1 seems to spin more but at a lower trajectory than its predecessor which I really like.  During my driver tests, the ball seems to be able the same in distance but it is definitely more durable.

The Pro V1x on the other hand definitely doesn’t spin as much so everything is rolling more.  Distance for my swing has improved by a couple yards but nothing major.

Overall, there’s no major changes in these new versions but they are definitely better because of the durability factor.

lorena ochoa

Lorena Ochoa is dominating on the LPGA Tour right now and it’s no surprised that she is always the favorite to win every tournament.

Lorena seems to just know how to win when she was young, because she actually never finished more than 3 strokes off the lead in any college event in her career.  She won 12 times in two years of college and were she to stay there for all four years, it’s safe to say that she would beat Julie Inkster’s record of 17 collegiate titles.

Lorena Ochoa actually turned pro just at the right time, because it was the time where Annika Sorenstam was the main focus of the LPGA Tour.  This allowed her to stay under radar until the time is right for her to start winning tournaments.

If there are any criticism of Lorena, it would be the lack of major championship titles.  However, with her golfing career still relatively young, you can bet that she will be adding to her major championship trophy case as well!

mark wilson
The media may not be buzzing about Mark Wilson as they do for someone like Rory Mcilroy but Mark is good.  In fact, he’s already won multiple tournaments on the PGA Tour with his Ping golf clubs.

Since 2003 when he joined the PGA Tour, Mark Wilson’s been quietly improving his rankings.  In 2007, he won his first tournament.  In 2008, he finished 38th on the fedex cup standings and he’s already won in 2009.

rory mcilroy
Rory Mcilroy is an incredibly talented golfer and one who will win many tournaments and majors to come. As a teenager, he’s already won on the European Tour and he in fact came close on the PGA Tour as well.

It will be no time before you see Rory Mcilroy crack the World Ranking’s top ten since he’s already very close (as of Feb 2009). Look out Tiger, the next threat might be someone from abroad.

tim clarkTim Clark proves that even in the highest level, hybrids work. He played in 2 President Cup with not one long iron in his bag. In fact, he came mighty close when he was the runner up at the 2006 Masters tournament and might go down in history as the guy who eliminated Tiger Woods in the first tournament since he recovered from his knee surgery in 2009.

tom watson
Tom Watson is a relentless competitor and a good one at that as well. As dominant as Jack Nicklaus was, Tom went head to head with him on more than one occasion and came out on top.

Did you know that in the 1977 British Open, Jack Nicklaus shot 66-66 on the final two rounds but lost by one to Tom Watson who shot 66-65? How about Tom’s famous chip shot on the 17th of Pebble Beach to win the 1982 U.S. Open over Jack? In fact, out of the eight major championships that Tom won, Jack was the runner up on four of them.
